The Habit Of Unproductive People You Don’t Want To Copy

People sitting together discussing

IS AN PRODUCTIVE SYSTEM NECESSARY?

Book Summary for DO IT TODAY by DARIUS FOROUX

Chapter 5 – The habit of unproductive people you don’t want to copy

πŸ›‘ We are back to this habit thing you say yet you forget that habit is intricately designed into our daily activities.

Chapter 4 to me was a bit intense as it picked a whole chunk out of life and throw it at me. I am not a good catch.

Though, I’ve been able to conclude that in order to understand each chapter, the hard part comes prior to the easy part.

Look at this chapter and chapter 4, they almost collide to disagree but looking closely the author wants us to know that being a productive person doesn’t mean you will be productive all the time and that it is necessary to have a system you rely on.

πŸ›‘ We all hate to be unproductive and that’s why we all must learn to eliminate these bad habits that can easily lead to unproductive actions.

πŸ›‘ The first habit is WORKING TOO MUCH
At about 5 years before now, I used to think working too hard brings in the now money but no it doesn’t work that way. It never does and you know why?

It is because when you work too hard or too much as we all know we want this money fast fast, now now, you exhaust too much energy and crash suddenly loosing all the work you have done so much.
I have come to believe that health is wealth and in another words it means, if the reason why you are working is to get sufficiency and money, then putting your health into consideration is essential!
How not to work too much;
1. Know yourself
2. Know your work (it could be in Strength measure or in a division of the workload per time)
3. Know your deadline
4. Be patient

πŸ›‘ The second habit is WORRYING TOO MUCH
There’s a game called the ‘what if I…’ game which I’ve played a long time ago and even though you don’t want to admit it, you have once played it too!
In the author’s exact word, I say to you my dear; GET OVER YOURSELF. STOP WORRYING AND DO SOMETHING USEFUL.

πŸ›‘ BEING STUBBORN (everyone had the slight trait of holding on to their opinion above others. Some to the extreme, some just slightly.)
This is a habit that on it’s plus side, it is god to be stubborn enough not to let critics get to you.
While on the minus side, can turn your relationship with people sour.

You know we all need relationships in career, business and so on.

πŸ›‘ CHECKING THINGS
It’s not bad except when you become obsessive of checking your Analytics every 5 minutes or your social media platforms every 2 minutes. When you check for information that are trivia, you might consume information that would cause you anxiety. Just relax, if you don’t check it in the next 2 days, the world will not stop.

πŸ›‘ ESCAPING LIFE
I hate to say this but just yesterday I wish to just escape away on vacation to my favorite country doing food tour instead of writing. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ You know what that means?

It means even if I do that, that wouldn’t change the status of the work from not done to done.

Sad enough that we might wish for vacation when we are meant to work but that’s not enough reason to give in. Unless you are the type that takes work along with you on vacation, then go onπŸ˜‚but if not, sit your bottoms down and work!😁

πŸ›‘SAYING YES
You don’t have to accept all requests because you don’t want to let people down Mother Theresa well done o.

Think it like this, if everyone that comes to you with requests are accepted, you are living someone else life. It means you are not in control of your time. So, say no to many things and yes to things that matters!

πŸ›‘ NOT WRITING THINGS DOWN
Super-brainy human beings! Are you there?
Writing things down helps you give much more space and time for your brain to rest.

I know you’re smart but keep your brain power for other things like critical thinking, problem solving and strategizing.

πŸ›‘ BEING HARD ON YOURSELF
why do you have to hate your life so much? Your circumstances shouldn’t taint your view of how beautiful you life can be on a good day.
Don’t you think talking yourself down is a bad habit?
You should be proud of yourself because for one; you got out of bed this morning! Two; you are surviving this thing called life!

πŸ›‘ NEGLECTING YOUR PERSONAL EDUCATION.
Congratulations you have graduated and earn a degree but that shouldn’t stop you from learning or using the knowledge from school because your life stop when you stop learning.

I studied psychology and everyday it has helped shaped my way of learning. I don’t know about you but learning doesn’t just have to be what you do in a strict way. Go for professional courses or associate degree or earn a soft skill badge. Just do one thing, DON’T STOP LEARNING!

πŸ›‘ HATING RULES
I hate rules just as much as you do. I feel it is constricting but you know life revolves on that right?
It’s just that, the cheat code to it is to know that you can create your own rules.

It doesn’t have to be hard but make them simple like never to complain, never to pay attention to triviality.

Whoops! Did you feel the same way about all that the author has said in this chapter? Tell me below, I accept your reservations with good heart and even the compliments😌❀️

How To Stop Wasting Time and Improve Your Personal Effectiveness

Book Review for DO IT TODAY by DARIUS FOROUX

Chapter 4 – How to stop wasting time and improve your personal effectiveness

TIME IS MONEY, TIME IS WEALTH YET…

πŸ›‘ Do you know that the more productive you are, the more happy you are? You may not have tested this theory but I concur with the first paragraph of this book about how the more effective you are and the more rewards you receive, the higher the likelihood of you to be merry and content.

All the times I’ve been content has been the time when my productivity was top notch and I’m not saying this to agree with the author but that’s the truth.

I am a happy being but life happens too! Sometimes we find ourselves in that low time but hey, have you also played attention to when your effectiveness is high, there is always a content feeling that at least something is going on for you, right?

πŸ›‘ The productivity the author emphasize here is not just the one about getting things and I mean a lot of things done which doesn’t matter but his emphasis is on effectiveness.

πŸ›‘ Effectiveness from this book means getting the right things done. For getting all the right things done equals the most important matters.

πŸ›‘ When your work doesn’t include effectiveness, you find yourself going around in circles, doing useless works that is not aligned with your desired outcome. While doing these useless work, you might appear busy yet you are not achieving anything.

My experience with importance of Effectiveness is this; I have a desire to become an OAP and just getting interns can be hard. I know I have to skill up and be productive in that area, so I did the best work that align with my purpose; podcasting. It has helped me discover how to pitch, write script for my presentation and even master the art of radio humor… I am not just busy but effective.

πŸ›‘ Results matter the most. There is no point working for so much hours without growing personally, emotionally, financially etc.

πŸ›‘ This book also claim that Peter Drucker has helped knowledge workers and even produced productivity tools and apps you see about. He eventually coined the term personal effectiveness.

The author made slight changes to the exercise from Drucker’s The Effective Executive for easy application and I’ll be sharing it below;

πŸ›‘1. Know your time
It’s sad how often I hear people say they don’t know why they keep postponing and procrastinating and the right question from this book they could have asked themselves is: “Do I know my time?”

It sound like an absurd question and it is simply is for you to be able to measure your time – to manage time, you have to know what you spend your time on.

How do you know that?

~ Keep an activity log: how you keep the log doesn’t matter, Al that matters is that you write down what you do per time. You can do it hourly and keep your pad and pen visible during the time. You can even use mobile pad or sectograph to keep tabs.

πŸ›‘2. Identify the non- productive work
The author has helped simplify this step and it’s on one question: “In your activity log, if you stop doing all of them, what would happen?
If it means ‘hell will break loose’ don’t change anything.
If your response is ‘nothing will change’ then it’s time to eliminate!

πŸ›‘ 3. Eliminate the non productive activities and time wasters
Filter the important activities from the trivia ones and cut out the trivia tasks that are time wasters.

πŸ›‘ The benefits of the steps above
1. It helps you note the start of new time waster behaviour that can turn into bad habits.

2. It helps set your daily routine and help you track and manage your time better.

You can get the book if you still don’t have it.

How To Beat Procastination (Backed up by science)

Book Summary for DO IT TODAY by DARIUS FOROUX

Chapter 3 – How to beat procastination

πŸ›‘ Once you know that always postponing today’s duty to tomorrow does not stop tomorrow’s duty, then you begin to realise procastination is your enemy.

If you do not realise this, you might still be making excuse for that problem and you know what they say; excuse does not stop the world from moving”

So those excuses are only stopping you! Not the world or people around you

πŸ›‘How to then beat procastination by the science of psychology?

1. Self-regulation requires doing things in system. A system is that structure or framework your work is built on.

For me, my system include, doing everything by time and on time.

For example, if I have a meeting slated by 2pm, I have a system for that meeting; preparing my note a day before, mental exercise, speech rehearsal, alarm reminder, internet check etc.

The only thing that can affect the meeting is impromptu factor.

2. Discipline
Going practical with discipline is like the hardest thing for a man to do. You have to master the act of self control to be able to discipline yourself better. Nobody is going to do that for you, it’s your responsibility

3. Self-imposed deadline
Even if I have a week to do the project, I love the peace that comes with doing everything before the deadline. I hate deadlines because they stress me out. Here’s what I do, I impose a deadline different from my work deadline and even constrict myself from using my time anyhow.

4. Buying time
This one is my one-time ingredient. If you have ever for to a cafe to browse, you will know you have to buy time and you can’t use more time than you buy.
That’s exactly what I do as well, there’s no overtime without consequences.

I book time for each of my task (of course, time sufficient enough to finish the job but not too much to condone lapse)
Once I flaunt that, I usually pay dearly with my sleep and I don’t joke with my sleep unless otherwise.

5. Internal motivation
Comrade, nobody will motivate you here, ok? So, stop going to social media under the cover of looking for contents that will motivate you and you will not find because that excuse is your way of escaping tasks.

6. Accountability
This one works always… I have a sister that calls every weekend to ask about my weekly tasks and how far I’ve gone.
I don’t like to impress but I find myself doing my tasks well so she can compliment me😁
She’s a strict woman that doesn’t dash day any day so you can imagine my ecstasy when she gives me.

You can aso find someone like that too.

Have you learn from this, comment below😁

What I Do When I Can’t Focus

Book Summary for DO IT TODAY by DARIUS FOROUX

Chapter 02 – What I Do When I Can’t Focus

Nobody wants a hard life, right? Loosing focus is pretty hard and no one wants that!

πŸ›‘ There’s a lot of distractions around you but don’t you think blaming these distractions for your unfinished projects is weak?

It is only what you give in to that can distract you – Your distractions need your permission!
I give in some times because my happiness level or energy level is low but that’s it. Weak!

This book provides 2 things to do when your focus is low

πŸ›‘1. Eliminate x3
The consistency of consumption of info and ideas are alarming these days especially now that the internet is saturated with lots of coaches, advisors, trainers etc but not every info can work for you!

Don’t forget also that the view you adopt will profoundly influence your life.

Yeah, it’s quite fine to take in the advice given but never forget to filter and eliminate ones that doesn’t increase productivity.

πŸ›‘2. Think Happiness
Now I Cleary see the deep meaning to the product description by the Peak Milk at one time; “Happiness, it’s in you!”

Truly happiness is in you and science has proven to us that the merry you, the focused you.

The physiological explanation to this could be also linked to the secretion of serotonin – a nerve chemical produced in our cerebral cortex that helps stabilize mood, reduce depression, increase libido, control sleep.

From the above, I’ve also come to realise why that in movies or books, the characters sleeps better when they are happy or reminded of happy memories and become more determined the next day.
You too can do that. Put to use the memories of your past success and look within for a place of happiness to conserve your energy to focus on your work!

πŸ›‘ My quotes from this;
Distractions are the window you left open; Windows are normally shut/opened from inside and no window can be opened unless you grant the permission.

Do you like this quote?
Do you gain from this? Tell me below

Part 1 – Overcoming Procastination

Chapter 1 summary by Ogunfalu Comfort

These few points from this chapter of the books helps you see why you have not been doing much.

πŸ›‘ There’s always an excuse for a decision or an action you put off.
If you don’t care about it, it becomes a continuous procastination.

πŸ›‘ You are responsible for your life. Not taking that action can affect a part of your life or whole. You have missed great opportunities because you postponed actions.

πŸ›‘ Battling procastination is an inner battle and blaming external factors for your procastination only worsen your case.

πŸ›‘ What you considered to be hard work like; reading, meeting that prospect today, sending those emails today, writing that book today is not hard work rather what is hard work is having to learn how to shoot at a war front when bullets flies around.
The bitter truth is running away from the hard task or Har work of your business or career means you are lazy!

πŸ›‘ If you know what to do and how to do it but you are not doing it, it means you are lazy!

πŸ›‘ How many times do you postpone the hard works and settle for the easy ones like loafing around the house laughing at some tiktoks videos or consuming internet gossips? If you do it often then you are lazy!

πŸ›‘ How to overcome laziness
1. Trust your ability to control your thoughts.

2. Practice mental and physical exercise, it helps keep you focus, energised and in shape.

3. Make use of your daily habits

4. Create a list of small important tasks to do today and do them!

5. Networking and art of persuasion

6. Build a sustainable system that can build your life, career and business.

7. Above all, do everything listed above today! Not tomorrow.

πŸ›‘ My quote from this chapter:
1. Escaping hard work is the product of laziness and the core of procastination!

2. A lazy man is not just someone who doesn’t have a job but also someone that knows what to do but not doing it.

3. Save the time of your life by doing what you have to do today

Do It Today by Darius Foroux

Are you Communicating or Just Rambling?

Communication is a universal concept that needs no technical effort to understand yet it is misused and result to conflicts when not used well.

Communication in a layman’s term is a connection allowing access between persons or places. Now, come to think of it. Why is communication not just about speaking and listening?

It is because communication is a lifestyle, it’s a cultivated tool of showing or proving something. It is a relationship.

Look out for relationships that lack good communication, do you see any relationship left in the union?

No! because the vital tool for accessing the physical and psychological being of a person is cut short or garbled.

Hence ask yourself if you have the relationship in that your interpersonal relationships?

Communication has various part to it and I’ll take two out of this from a book I read last week.

Listening and Speaking

Speaking

This is the part of communication that involves address or delivering utterances as a way of informing, showing, responding and approving.

Speaking is an intelligent exercise that includes both mental and physical use of the being in order to communicate with the other significant.
Speaking can result to conflict if the language use is not universal, biased and deprecating.

Whereas;

Listening is not just replying to what you have heard but it is a way to show that the language in which the other significant is talking in is understood.

Listening is not a waiting time between when your partner speak and when you speak. It is a time to understand what your partner is saying, read into the context of their speech, read meaning into their body language and assess what to you gain from their speech.

Do you know giving the chance to listen to someone helps them organise their thought and process their Behavior?

Sometimes, some people talk because they need to gather up idea on what to do while they talk about it. All they need is their time to do the talking while you listen.

Tips to make you an outstanding listener

1. Use non-intrusive verbal and nonverbal signs to edge them on.

2. Give space for their thought gathering. Silence is golden sometimes.

3. Let them run til the steam is out.
Especially for those that are angry, they can’t think clearly when they are clouded with their perception.

4. Don’t play the role of psychologist. Not everybody that talk to you need that advice you are dishing out. Stopeeet! Stop that psychoanalysis you are performing on that person talking to you. Don’t be quick assume and speculative about their motivation or intent. Ask and if they wish, they would share.

5. Keep your unsolicited advice to yourself, resist the urge to compare circumstances even when they are similar because there are cultural difference, personality difference and environmental factors.

6. Put your input when asked for and watch out for feedback.

7. Don’t force your recommendations on anybody. No one is obliged to take your advice or recommendations.

8. When talking to someone and you want to register what they have said, don’t parrot their words back. Paraphrase as little as you can.

Practice time!

Put this into practice by calling a friend on phone who you have spoken with quite a while. Watch out for these tips and infuse them into your actions.

FROM FRAGRANCE TO FIRE

This is a short story about how much a Nigerian student and her plans has suffered in the hands of ASUU AND FG. Come to her rescue and the rescue of other millions of students who have disrupted plans and contorted vision of education. They have ended up seeing education as a sham and scam. The rapid increase of crime and violence is alarming!

Written by Ogunfalu Comfort; an author and a psychologist who has her focus on the mental or psychological implications of even the mundane things we do. She is a podcaster who has broadcasted my shows on mental health, interpersonal skills and lifestyle. Her book club has also helped with reading habits as she consults on writing, reading and doing something meaningful. Aside from this, she is also a personal development coach.

LET ME TELL YOU A STORY OF HOW MY FRAGRANCE OF GOALS AND PLANS TURN TO FIRE!

Backtrack to the beginning…

One of #Dunsin Oyekan’s popular song began to blast from the speaker connected to the home theater system in the living room whilst I peel the ripe sweet-smelling plantains into the bowl in front of me on the kitchen counter. I wiggled my hips, belting the lyrics along with the artiste like I know the song by heart.

My kitchen is not one of the state-of-art kinds of kitchen you see on televisions or in advert but it is modest and decent for a young student like me. I have kept the walls decent with floral wallpapers because of flames which could easily create unaesthetic design on the wall and God knows I hate cleaning as much as I hate cooking.

The song on the playlist faded into a new song and I started singing with it as I swiped the skins of the peeled plantains off the counter into the bin beside the counter and dragged the bowl closer as I began to cut the plantains into flat uneven slices. Like I said, I don’t like cooking, there are but few things in the world that can drag my attention to the kitchen and FRIED PLANTAIN WITH FRIED EGGS is one! No wonder ever since I found my passion for kitchen because of this delicacy, it has not only draw my attention to the kitchen but the other way. It has brought forward the attention of hidden fats in my body to the surface and exclusive number out of the men’s population to my round curves. No sharp edges at all. I better not stop eating this!

The current song got to that part I love, bobbing my head like someone in a concert, I started putting the slices of plantain into the medium heated oil since I like my plantains golden brown and neither like it went through the fiery furnace the three Hebrew men were threw nor like it just came out of a deep freezer. Again, the solo of the song, β€œFragrance To Fire” by Dunsin Oyekan went from solo to the chorus where I can loose the beautiful strings of musical chords in my throat.

Having put slices into the oil to fill the space it could allow in the pan I’m using, I nearly toppled down the rest of the plantain slices in the bowl on the counter as I raised my hands, head and voice up as if I was in a crusade. My picture could have made a meme that year if I had someone to take the moment in a snapshot. I didn’t stop there, not only did I raise my head but I had my eyes shut because I defiantly did not want to miss the Holy Spirit impartation from the song while in my kitchen in a booty short and a camisole.

You can’t blame me If you have listened to Dunsin’s song very well or you are a fan, you will know that he repeats choruses and bridges multiple times and there is that energy in his voice that tempt you and eventually win you to join him in singing the song like you are there with him. So, that’s how my fragrance started and I am not talking about the song. MY DAMN PLANTAINS WERE SINGING ALONG WITH ME. I was too deep in the song spirit to smell my own fragrance-the one I deserved not the one I was sending to Abba Father through the worship song!

To cut the long story short, my fragrance of sweet-smelling plantains turned to fire and not only that it has long release the fragrance of the both the burnt offering I was to received and the one I was sending heavenward but I had ignored it o. By the time the climax of the song resolved and I looked down, lo and behold! A firerised pan of plantains I couldn’t even recognized welcomed my sight and the kitchen has darkened due to the heavy cloud of firerized fragrance. How?!

I started coughing as I inhaled the smoke, in a moment the smoke got to my cerebral cortex and I jumped a feet into the air before I used the other hand that is not covering my mouth and nose to trace for the switch of the gas cooker. I opened the vent to let the firerized fragrance out and let blessed fresh air into the smoked kitchen. I have never wished for fresh air in my life as I did for the moment I got swallowed in the smoke.

After about two hours trying to dissipate the smoke, my phone pinged and I picked it up from the counter edge, a wonder on how I had not hit it off the counter while my hand had turned up the knob of the controller of my burner up a notch. Damned burner controller!

I left the kitchen with grime and red-rimmed watered eyes and a heaving chest as if I had ran marathon. On getting to the living, I sat on the couch and turn my phone on as the screen lit up, displaying series of notifications on the lock screen, I swiped off the mundane and trivia notifications from my network providers, my bank and other ads from Gmail, I stopped dead on a whatsapp notification that read; O TUN TI ZEH O, HAPPUN???
My gist-loving self instinctually unlocked the phone, made a beeline to my class group on whatsapp for the full gist. As I click on the group, I was assaulted by the headline that drew my attention with more to it and I let out a; β€œYeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee”

First it was fragrance, then it turn to fire,…

Me: After reading the monthly read for January; Atomic Habit, I became consistent with my personal development but most importantly, I overcame slime based habit like postponing. Moving on to February, it was a tough month because I became intentional about my brands visibility, I had a lot to do that I couldn’t keep up with my reading but I still did it!

Share your testimony hereπŸ‘‡February Testimonials

To top off the goodies we have received this month, I have listed out few out of the numerous lessons I learnt from “The 5 Second Rule” and trust me when I say you missed a lot where you don’t read books.

Books are treasure holders and I’m a treasure hunter ready to take it all!

8 Lessons From The Book

Infographic on the 8 Lessons From The 5second rule book

1. The Rule is a “starting ritual” that activates the prefrontal cortex helping to change a behaviour.

2. Pushing myself to take simple actions create a chain reaction to your confidence and productivity.

3. Pushing myself to take the simple step to move my life forward so as to experience a sense of freedom and power that’s hard to describe.

4. Locus of control – The more I believe that I’m in control of my life, actions and future, the happier and most successful I’ll be. This is an important concept in psychology but Julian Rotter in 1954.

5. Nothing will change if I always wait to be motivated before doing anything. But the moment I assert myself and kick my butt, motivation won’t matter and that’s the power of push.

6. There’s nothing more powerful than the feeling of confidence and pride I gain when I keep moving forward, facing life’s challenges heads on to change for the better.

7. The Rule doesn’t make things easier; it makes them happen

8. Knowing what I need to do to improve my life takes wisdom but pushing myself to do it takes courage.
